What is the Puzzle Centre?
The Puzzle Centre is a collection of interactive puzzles designed to test out your infection control knowledge. It is free and open to all domiciliary and care staff within Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
What does the Puzzle Centre contain?
It contains a mixture of true or false, multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank puzzles in three difficulty levels covering four topics.
What topics does the Puzzle Centre cover?
The Puzzle Centre covers four main topics. These are:
- Cause and spread of infection
- Preventing and controlling the spread of infection
- Legislation relevant to infection prevention and control
- Roles, responsibilities and boundaries.
What is the difference between the bronze, silver and gold puzzles?
Each puzzle has been written to reflect an NVQ level starting with Bronze being Level 1 equivalent, Silver being Level 2 equivalent, and Gold being Level 3 equivalent.

...if you do not read, write or speak English fluently, or if your work tasks could be regarded as routine and predictable. |

...if you are at NVQ level 3 or if you are performing complex and non-routine tasks regularly. You may also have responsibility for managing or guiding others. |

Can I use the Puzzle Centre if I’ve attended an HCAI Challenge training course?
Yes, we recommend that anyone who has attended a training course completes the Puzzle Centre to enhance their infection control knowledge further.

How do I play the puzzles?
After choosing a bronze, silver or gold puzzle, read the on-screen question and answer it accordingly.
Do I have to complete the topics in order?
No, you can play the topics in ANY order you wish.
What is the minimum pass mark?
The pass mark for all puzzles within the Puzzle Centre is 60%.
What happens if I do not achieve the minimum pass mark?
You will not be awarded a Certificate of Achievement until you achieve a 60% pass mark.You may play the puzzles as many times as you wish to achieve the pass mark.
Can I stop mid-way through a puzzle?
No, you must complete each puzzle in order for your score to count.
Can I use my internet browser’s ‘back’ button while playing a puzzle?
You can use your browser's 'back' button anywhere in the site EXCEPT while playing the puzzles. This is to prevent a question being scored twice.
If I’ve answered a question incorrectly do I get another chance to answer it?
No. The Puzzle Centre is an assessment of your knowledge and therefore it takes your first answer. However, you can play the puzzle again to improve your score.
How can I find out what puzzles I’ve completed?
Go to the Personal Achievements section.
If I’ve already completed a gold puzzle and passed but then later completed either a silver or bronze puzzle but not achieved the pass mark, is my higher rating affected?
No, the highest score from the hardest difficulty will always be used on your Certificate.
What do I get when I’ve completed the four topics?
If you have achieved the 60% pass mark for one puzzle within each of the four topics, you can print a personalised Certificate of Achievement from the Personal Achievements section. See the Certificates section for more information.
Are my scores shared with anyone?
Your individual scores for the Puzzle Centre are not shared with anyone.
